SCYC: Positive Youth Development Training
June 7, 2019 @ 8:30 am - 3:00 pm

Positive Youth Development, “PYD”, is an approach that is sweeping the nation changing youth environments by engaging and including young people in the strategizing and development of youth programs, policies affecting youth and changing communities as a whole.
* Why do we want to do this? By adopting a PYD approach we not only get to see an improvement in youth buy-in to our programs, businesses or communities, we also get to give these young people a real-life experience that they will take with them into the world of adulthood.
* Why have we shared this with you? Maybe you work directly with youth through school, programs, or activities, or, maybe you come across young people through the work you do as a court or government official, law enforcement or business owner. Or, maybe your a parent of a young person between the ages of 9 and 25 and want to have a better understanding of what’s happening in their world. Whoever you are, we believe this training is for anyone!
PYD is an evidence based approach steeped in the three core values of
- skills
- opportunities to practice skills
- building positive, authentic relationships
This approach is supported with the five principles
- youth engaged as partners
- strengths-based
- inclusive
- sustainable
- collaborative
By bringing young people to the table we not only get a better glimpse into what attracts them to programs or how we may do a better job recruiting young people to our events or jobs, we will also support them in building valuable skills; hard skills like public speaking, organization or planning as well as those soft skills like how to listen, communicate or build lasting relationships.
