Learn a basic wet felting technique by making a coin bag with Eliseo Curley, an award-winning Navajo artist and sheepherder from Shiprock, N.M. An exhibit of Eliseo’s current felting art will follow the workshop in the evening of the same day. Materials for your small coin bag will be provided.
Eliseo has been working with the fiber for many years, and volunteers with the Sheep Is Life Celebration and Diné Be Iiná, inc, a not for profit organization that supports Navajo-Churro sheep on the Navajo Nation. Eliseo raises his own flock of Navajo-Churro sheep which he moves to the Carrizo Mountains in the summer, and has many stories to share with students in this afternoon class. Although he uses the wool to felt and weave he also raises the sheep for meat. Eliseo may be contacted through Facebook messenger.
